September 27, 2024 – The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has awarded a contract to NUMARK to provide technical support for evaluation of nuclear graphite waste. NUMARK’s team of experts will support the NRC’s Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES) in activities related to graphite waste management. The period of performance of the work is from September 2024 to September 2025.
NUMARK will provide detailed reports on:
- the current state of knowledge of nuclear graphite waste, focusing on technical safety, relevance to reactor design, waste management strategies, and other regulatory considerations; and
- current regulations relevant to graphite waste, particularly related to transportation and storage. The waste transportation and storage regulations and standards will be assessed for technology independence. Methods implemented for addressing graphite waste in the US, UK, Germany and other countries will be included in this review.
NUMARK’s efforts addressing the state of knowledge of technical and regulatory considerations will support near-term licensing/certification actions and development of efficient and effective safety reviews.
NUMARK, founded in 1991, has provided technical support services to nuclear regulatory authorities in the United States and abroad since 2007. NUMARK supports public and private sector clients in the United States and around the world in the areas of nuclear safety, international development, environmental protection, and sustainable energy strategies.
